This chapter is a continuation of our stroll through Suigo Ayame Park.
There are two ways to propel a boat using human power: using "kai (櫂, かい, oars)" and using a "ro (櫓, ろ)". Kai are attached to the side of a boat whereas a ro is attached to the stern.
The underwater section of ro has an airfoil-shaped cross section, so by twisting it slightly left and right, it generates lift, making it more efficient to propel than kai. With a ro, even a small person or a woman can operate a boat.
A rowing boat that uses a ro is called a "ro-bune (ろ舟)," and in the Suigo area, it is also called a "sappa-bune (サッパ舟)."
① I’ve found yellow hanashoubu. They are called "light of spring (春の灯)."
② Yellow and purple hanashoubu are blooming. The whole flowers don’t fit in the frame.
③ Mom is holding me. Now the flowers fit into the frame.

⑥ There is a foot-operated waterwheel behind the sappa boat.

⑧ The foot-operated waterwheel lifts water from a lower water level on the right to a higher water level on the left. When you want to turn the waterwheel, you hold the bamboos indicated by the yellow arrows in both hands and step alternately on the foot holds indicated by the red arrow with your left and right feet. This makes the water flow in the direction indicated by the light blue arrows.

⑩ There is a nice bridge. I'll climb it.
⑪ There are water lilies blooming under the bridge.
