The Japanese clock made by Iizuka Igashichi was restored and has been relocated from Gokakudo to the Yatabe Museum in Tsukuba City, 500 meters away.

The pamphlet of the museum lists the cultural properties of the former Yatabe-machi: "Gokakudo and a Japanese clock", "Fudo Namiki", "Hanare Kannon-do (羽成観音堂) and a painting of celestial maidens (天女の絵)".

"The picture of the celestial maidens" is a painting on the ceiling of Hanare Kannon-do, which was painted by Hirose Shutaku, a doctor of the Yatabe clan, when he was 16 years old (1797).

Hanare Kannon-do is one of the temples built by Yura Kunishige (由良国繁) in 1592, the lord of Ushiku Castle, to mourn the souls of the Okami clan, who perished in the battle near Yatabe.

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (観音菩薩) can transform into thirty-three different forms in order to suit the given situation and lend a helping hand. Among them, the representative figure is called Roku Kannon, and Bato Kannon is one of them.

Bato Kannon has the virtue of saving animals. If you pray to Bato Kannon after your pet has passed away, Bato Kannon will take your pet to Buddha. In other words, Bato Kannon is a very dog-friendly Kannon.

Today we went to Hanare Kannon-do.

You’ll be disappointed if you expect Hanare Kannon-do to have a large monastery like Tsukubasan Shrine.

Hanare Kannon-do is located in the woods on a plain. Once you are in the woods, you'll see there is nothing modern in sight.

Hanare Kannon-do is not listed in the tourist guidebook of Tsukuba city. No one visits here except during the Kannon-do festival. However, it is a popular filming location for period dramas along with Kanamurawakeikazuchi Shrine (金村別雷神社 かなむらわけいかずちじんじゃ). Hanare Kannon-do is a space that has stayed frozen in time in the Edo period.

This time, Dad’ll post photos of me who traveled back in time to the Edo period.

You cannot enter Hanare Kannon-do, so you cannot see the ceiling painting by Hirose Shutake. Instead, I’ll introduce an illustration based on the ceiling painting.
