Makabe-machi has a large number of traditional buildings, including 102 registered cultural properties. In 2010, they were selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
In 1837 (Tempo 天保 8), there was a great fire here.
After that, the thatched roofs and shingle roofs for jinya (a place where soldiers were encamped) were replaced with tiled roofs and gambrel roofs. And the thatched roofs and shingle roofs for merchant houses were replaced with storehouses and Misegura（見世蔵：buildings which combine shops and residences with tiled roofs).
The oldest surviving building was built immediately after the great fire. In the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, more than 90% of traditional buildings were damaged in Makabe-machi, and disaster recovery projects were carried out.
Since 2003, the Makabe district of Makabe-machi has been holding the Hinamatsuri from Feb.4 to March 3rd. It was temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus, but in 2023, the 19th Hinamatsuri is being held for the first time in three years, so we went there.
This time, I’ll introduce the Hina dolls displayed in the storehouse of Kawashima Clothing Store, which was built in the late Edo period (1830-1867). These Hina dolls were broadcast on TV on February 17, 2023.
This building is also a registered cultural property and was repaired after being severely damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake.
