Fukuoka Zeki is an intake weir located in Tsukubamirai City next to Tsukuba City. It is one of the three great weirs in the Kanto region built on the Kokai River (小貝川) in the Edo period, and has been selected as one of the 100 Ibaraki sightseeing spots and one of the top 100 best views of Ibaraki.
From the Fukuoka Zeki, a 1.8km irrigation canal runs along the Kokai River. About 450 Someiyoshino cherry trees are planted on the embankment of the Kogai River, which is adjacent to the irrigation canal, making it a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. Next to Fukuoka Zeki, there is Fukuoka Zeki Sakura Park and Ina Shrine.
In the early Edo period, the Kinu River and the Kokai River met at Tsukubamirai City (formerly Yawahara Village), and floods frequently occurred at the confluence. In 1624, Tadatsugu Ina, the governor of the Kanto region, constructed a river to divide the flow of the Kokai River and the Kinu River. At this time, the Yamadanuma weir was built on the Kokai River. After that, the Yamadanuma weir was relocated and became the Fukuoka Zeki.
Tadatsugu Ina built all three weirs in the Kanto region: Fukuoka Zeki, Oka Zeki, and Toyoda Zeki.
Ina Shrine was built in 1941 to enshrine Tadatsugu Ina.
I went to see the cherry blossoms at Fukuoka Zeki for the first time.
Three bridges cross the waterway along the 1.8km embankment.
It is exceptionally long, so this time I will introduce the sights from the downstream bridge to the central bridge.
