"Dondoyaki" is a traditional Japanese event held around January 15th.
New Year’s decorative items such as Kadomatsu (pine decorations), Shimenawa(straw festoons) and Kakizome (New Year’s calligraphy writings) are burned together with “yagura'' or a scaffold which is made of bamboo and straw. People pray for good health and a rich harvest through this fire festival.
We heard that a dondoyaki event was going to be held at the Oda Castle Ruins Historical grounds, so we went to see it.
① We’ve arrived at the Oda Castle Ruins.
② You can see a scaffold and a priest in kimono. We have some time until the fire is lit, so we’re going to take a walk around the tower.
③ I am in front of the tower.
④ I am in front of the tower.
⑤ I’ve climbed a mound.
⑥ The wind is blowing above the mound.
⑦ You can see Mt. Hokyo behind the tower.
⑧ You can see Mt. Tsukuba behind the tower.
⑨ The people in charge are setting up used pine decorations and shimenawa on the tower.
⑩ They are ready to set the fire, so Dad’ll go to the front of the tower with me in his arms.
⑪ Wow, there are Daruma dolls, Kadomatsu, stuffed bears, arrangement of a thousand origami cranes and so on.
⑫ Children are lighting the fire with a starter flame attached to the end of a bamboo pole.
⑬ The fire has been lit.
⑭ The flame has grown larger. It's extremely hot, so I’ll stay away from the tower.
⑮ Dad lowered me to the ground.
⑯ It's still hot, so I'm running away.
⑰ From this distance, we can rest assured.
⑱ I’m feeling a little relieved.
⑲ I started walking.
⑳ There are pebbles underfoot, making it difficult for me to walk.
㉑ We have moved quite far away from the tower.
㉒ Oh, my goodness! The tower has begun to lean.
㉓ The tower has collapsed. Dad said, “Don’t worry. This is by design.”
㉔ It’s about time to go home.
