文字数 2,068文字

Senhime(千姫) is the granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu(徳川家康), born on April 11, 1597.

In 1626, she faced many misfortunes as her husband, mother-in-law, and mother died one after another. That year, Senhime entered Edo Castle, became a nun and changed her name to Tenjuin. After that, until her death in 1666, she held the supreme advisory authority of the inner palace of Edo Castle.

For this reason, she is a celebrity who often appears in historical novels and historical dramas from the Edo period.

Senhime, who died in 1666, was buried at Dentsuin (Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo), the family temple of the Tokugawa family. Gugyoji (弘経寺) also has a grave dedicated to Senhime.

Senhime is the most famous person in Joso City, where her grave is located, so the mascot character of Joso City is "Senhime Chama (千姫ちゃま)". In addition, the three female tourism ambassadors who dress up as Senhime are named “Tourism Ambassadors Senhime-sama (観光大使千姫さま).” They appear in the parade "Senhime-sama circular tour in Joso" every April 11th.

Gugyoji(弘経寺) allows dogs to walk on its grounds, so we went to visit Senhime's grave.

① This is the entrance of Gugyoji Temple (location of the old Sanmon gate). On the right is Raigosugi (300 years old, trunk circumference 7.53m), and on the left are two ginkgo trees.

② This is the main hall that was renovated in 2008. At that time, the temple gate and bell tower were dismantled and preserved, and are no longer built.

③ I’m standing at the entrance to Senhime's grave.

④ This is Senhime's grave. I'm not allowed to enter inside the cemetery.

⑤ I’m taking a walk in front of the autumn leaves.

⑥ These are very small statues of the Buddhist deity called Jizo. The faces are different, so I never get tired of seeing them. You might find a Jizo that looks like me.

⑦ These are Jizo for a religious service for a miscarried or aborted fetus.

⑧ I’m walking on the carpet of fallen autumn leaves next to the Jizo.

⑨ I’m taking a rest on a carpet of fallen autumn leaves.
