Ashikaga Shigeuji (足利成氏), the Kamakura Kubo (鎌倉公方), moved to Koga City (古河市), Ibaraki Prefecture in 1455 and became the Koga Kubo (古河公方).
(“Kamakura Kubo'' is the head of Kamakura Prefecture, which was established during the Muromachi period by the Muromachi shogunate shogun who lived in Kyoto, in order to govern the 10 countries in the Kanto region.)
Since then, the Koga Kubo was a powerful force for five generations until 1853. During the Edo period, the Koga feudal lord planted peach trees around the Koga Kubo building, and it became a famous spot for peach blossom viewing. Meanwhile, the Gosho swamp (御所沼)that surrounded the building was filled in and turned into rice paddies.
Koga Kubo Park was opened in 1975 on the site of the Koga Kubo building with an area of 5 hectares (12.35acres). Afterwards, the scale was expanded to 22.4hectares (55.35acres), and Gosho swamp was restored, and the excavated soil was used to create Fujimi hill.
Currently, there are about 1,700 hana peaches and a lotus pond in the northern half, and in the southern half, there are Gosho swamp and historical sites related to Koga Kubo.
The restoration of the swamp was evaluated highly, and this park was awarded the UNESCO-Greece Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes in 2003.
So, we went to see the peach grove there, where the “Koga Peach Festival” is being held (3/16 to 3/31).
A hot-air balloon ride event was being held in the central field of the park. When Dad asked the staff in charge, we learned that dogs were allowed on board. So, I was able to fly in the sky for the first time in my life, becoming a "hot-air balloon dog."
In this chapter, I'll talk about peach and canola flowers, and in the next chapter, I'll talk about a dog in a hot-air balloon.
