On New Year's Day, we went to “Daiho Hachimangu Shrine (大宝八幡宮)” for our New Year's visit.
When we searched online for shrines that allow dogs, we found that this shrine in Shimotsuma City, next to Tsukuba City, said that dogs were allowed except inside the building.
Daiho Hachimangu Shrine is said to have been built in 701, and has grown to its current size since the Edo period.
Around Daiho Hachimangu Shrine, there used to be a wetland called “Daiho-numa (大宝沼)”, and from 1232 to 1343, Daiho Castle (大宝城) stood on the site of Daiho Hachimangu Shrine. The castle was surrounded by Daiho-numa on three sides: north, west, and east. In other words, Daiho Castle was a fortress like Mont-Saint-Michel.
There are two legends about this shrine: "One thing(一つもの)" and "Tsubame and Yoshiie (つばめと義家)". The former is a story of "a big snake" that lived in Daiho-numa, and the latter refers to " a dragon" that used to live in Lake Chuzenji.
Daiho-numa was reclaimed once in the Edo period, but due to the eruption of Mt. Asama, it returned to the marsh again. The legend was created at that time. After the Meiji period, Daiho-numa was reclaimed and all of it became paddy fields. I suppose that even if the dragon comes, there is no place to live.
The main hall of Daiho Hachimangu Shrine built in 1577 and the ruins of Daiho Castle are important national cultural properties.
Daiho Hachimangu Shrine is also famous for its hydrangeas.
① This is the Zuijinmon (meaning to follow as a guard) in the middle of the long approach to the shrine.
② I’m walking along the path to the shrine.
③ We've arrived at the worship hall located at the entrance of the main hall.
④ I’m in front of the worship hall. There are two large Komainu (guardian dog statues) in the back.
⑤ I bowed twice, clapped twice and bowed once more while being held by Mom.
⑥ There are Seven Lucky Gods on a treasure ship.
⑦ There are also Seven Lucky Gods here. I wonder if I can join them too.
