As you climb the stairs from the parking lot, you’ll see the bell tower on your right. Hydrangeas are beautiful around here, so in the last chapter, I introduced a picture of me and the hydrangeas under the bell tower.
After climbing the straight stairs on the entry road, you’ll see the Niomon gate introduced in the last chapter.
After passing the Niomon Gate, there is a precinct. You can see the “Temizu” building on your right.
(Temizu is a place for the ritual cleansing of hands and mouth with water when visiting shrines and temples.)
There is a sculpture of the dragon, the god who controls water, and it is very beautiful with flowers floating in the basin.
After cleansing your hands and climbing the stairs, you’ll see a giant castanopsis tree with a height of 15m and a trunk circumference of 7.5m. It is called “Yado Shii” (宿椎）because when the temple caught fire in 1472, the main priest stayed under the tree after the temple burned down. (“Yado” means an inn and “Shii” means castanopsis, a tree’s name).
Climbing further will bring you to the open space with old buildings such as the main hall (Kannon-do, built in 1682), Toshogu (built in 1727), Tahoto (built in 1853), and Okunoin (built in 1792).
Oh, my! Some peacocks are walking. They are beautiful!
Main hall: : The Kanzeon Bosatsu, a god who exterminates evil and gives blessings for prolonging life as well as safe delivery and raising of children, is displayed.
Toshogu: The 10th generation priest Yuen (宥円) built it in 1625.
Tahoto: The 22m high tower was renovated into a double tower in 1853.
I thought there was a treasure in Tahoto because "Tahoto" means Treasure Tower. To my regret, there was no treasure. But I think the tower, hydrangeas and peacocks are treasures.

“Yado Shii” is too big a tree to fit in a photo.
