(455) Tulips which bloom in winter

文字数 2,576文字

Few flowers bloom in midwinter. Sasanquas, camellias, pansies, and daffodils are often seen, but other flowers are hard to find.

When we were looking for places where flowers were blooming even in winter, we learned that they were blooming in the flower bed on Katsuragi Road in iias Tsukuba (shopping mall) and in front of the flower shop at the south end of Katsuragi Road. Therefore, we went there.

Tulips were blooming in the flowerbeds of Katsuragi Road. It is unnatural for tulips to bloom in February.

So, we did some research and found that if you put tulip bulbs in a fridge at 5℃ (41℉) in the fall for about two months, the bulbs will wake up from dormancy and bloom in the middle of winter, thinking that winter is over.

For winter-blooming tulips, the bulbs are flown in from the Netherlands, where they are produced, and planted around early November. That’s why you can enjoy tulips from January for the early varieties and from February for the late varieties.

Winter-blooming tulips are sometimes called “miracle tulips", or “ice tulips”, etc.

Dutch tulip cultivation technology is advanced. I remember that Dad once bought summer-blooming tulips as a souvenir at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands in August.
