The English meaning of “dogfighter” is "a fighter pilot engaged in aerial combat".

There is a park called “ Yokaren Peace Memorial park” in Ami Town, which is next to Tsukuba City, where our family lives.

“Yokaren (予科練)” stands for “Naval Aviator Preparatory Course Trainees” and represents a system in which juveniles from all over Japan were selected through examinations and trained as crew members (dogfighters).

From 1930 to the end of the war in 1945, about 240,000 boys enlisted, about 24,000 went to war, and 80%, or 19,000, died in action. The number of recruits increased rapidly after the war intensified, and the number of graduates decreased compared to the number of recruits because the training was canceled at the end of the war.

“Yokaren Peace Memorial Park” is a park that commemorates the existence of the Yokaren.
In addition, there is “Kasumigaura Peace Memorial Park '' next to it.

Dogs are not allowed in the Yokaren Peace Memorial Hall, but they are allowed in the Yokaren Peace Memorial Park.

At the Yokaren Peace Park, there is a full-scale model of the famous Zero Fighter on display, so I felt like a dogfighter and had a commemorative photo taken.

The zero fighter is a full-scale model made in Sept. 2015 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Yokaren Peace Memorial Hall. The Zero Fighter is displayed indoors in the hangar on weekdays, and is displayed outdoors only on Sundays.

A life-size replica of Kaiten-type 1, which was donated to Ami Town and was used for the filming of the 2006 drama "Our War," is also on display.

① This is Zero fighter on weekdays. It is in the hangar.

② This is Zero fighter on a Sunday. It is out of the hangar.

③ This is also Zero fighter on a Sunday. I'm curious about the approaching motorcycle and I’m looking away.

④ I'm in front of a “Kaiten” model.

⑤ We climbed the small hill of Kasumigaura Peace Memorial Park. You can see the Yokaren Peace Memorial Hall directly behind me, and the Zero Fighter hangar to the right.

⑥I’m in Kasumigaura Peace Memorial Park. You can see Lake Kasumigaura and lotus root fields in the background.
