“Mobile Police Patlabor”, set in Tokyo in 1998, was broadcast as a video animation in 1988, and has been popular in media such as movies, manga, novels, and games.

The story is about a world where industrial robot labor has spread. This group of robots are collectively called “Labor.” As crimes committed by Labor increase, the Metropolitan Police Department establishes a new Patlabor unit.

In the story, Tsuchiura City appears as the location of "Shaft Enterprise Japan Tsuchiura Laboratory" that develops the villain Labor robots.
In 2020, exhibitions celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mobile Police Patlabor were held nationwide.

In 2022, an exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of Mobile Police Patlabor in Tsuchiura was held at the Tsuchiura Civic Gallery.

In 2023, 15 types of manhole covers designed after Mobile Police Patlabor were made and exhibited at Tsuchiura City Hall from March 24th to April 9th.

These manhole covers are currently installed on the sidewalk between Tsuchiura Station and Kijyo Park. So, we went to see the designed manhole covers.

From April 29, 2023, Tsuchiura City has been distributing coasters with the same designs to those who spread the photos of the designed manhole covers online, limited to 1000 of each type.
The upper part of the manhole cover lists famous places and event names that Tsuchiura City is proud of, the lower part features the name of a particular character or robot, and the corresponding character is drawn in the center.

This time, I’ll introduce 8 of 15 types of the designed manholes covers.
