Tsuchiura Municipal “Manabe School” opened in 1877 and renamed “Manabe Elementary School” in 1882.

In Feb. 1907, the school moved from Nishi Manabe (now Manabe 2-chome) to Manabedai (now Manabe 4-chome). At that time, graduates of Manabe Elementary School donated Someiyoshino cherry trees to commemorate the completion of the new school campus, which were planted along the bank. Since then, the school grounds have been expanded. Now the cherry trees are in the center of the school grounds.

Five old Someiyoshino cherry trees (116 years old) in the school grounds were designated as prefectural natural monuments in 1952 as "Manabe cherry blossoms(真鍋のサクラ)". These Someiyoshino were estimated to be the second oldest Someiyoshino after several trees planted in Hirosaki Park in Aomori Prefecture in 1882 (estimated 141 years old). Hirosaki Park has more than 300 Someiyoshino cherry trees that are over 100 years old.

However, according to a tree survey in 2016, the Someiyoshino cherry trees (transplanted in 1878) at Kaiseiyama Park in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture were recognized as the oldest in Japan (145 years old), so, the Manabe cherry trees have changed to third place.

Someiyoshino is a single clone that is propagated by cuttings or grafting, so all Someiyoshino have the same genes. "Oldest" is just a distinction according to when it was transplanted.

Next to Manabe Elementary School is Tsuchiura First High School, which moved to its current location on March 5, 1905. One of the school buildings is a national important cultural property. Tsuchiura First High School's Someiyoshino cherry trees are also beautiful, but they are not as old as the ones in Manabe Elementary School.
