If you follow the forest road next to the pavilion of Mt.Tsukuba Plum Grove, you’ll come to a temple called “Shiiosan Yakuoin(椎尾山薬王院).

This temple is said to have been built in 782.
In the precincts of Mt. Shiio, at an altitude of 200m, there is a colony of sudajii (スダ椎 a kind of Castanopsis) that is 300 to 500 years old and is called the “juso of Shiiozan Yakuoin Temple 椎尾山薬王院の樹叢”(a forest area where native trees are naturally dense).

Around December, it also becomes a famous place for autumn leaves.

Yakuoin has old buildings such as the main hall (Ruriden, 1680), the two-story gate (Niomon, 1688), and the three-story pagoda (1704).

The master carpenter who built the main hall and the tower gate was Sebei Sakurai, and the three-story pagoda was Sebei Sakurai Junior (Sezaemon Yasunobu Sakurai). Sakurai Sebei Junior is famous for building the three-story pagoda (25m high) at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple.

The three-story pagoda here is 25m high, which is the same height as the pagoda of Shinshoji Temple.

Around Benten Pond, Hinamatsuri was held, so I’ll tell you about it next time.

② I saw a big sudajii.

③ This is Romon, two-story gate. You can see the big “Setta” for traffic safety.

④ I had Dad take a commemorative photo in front of the large Setta.

⑤This is a path to the shrine. You can see the main hall in the back.

⑥I just climbed the path. From the front, you can see the bridge of Benten Pond, the main hall, and the three-story pagoda.

⑦This is the three-story pagoda.

⑧I’m in front of the pagoda.
