(266) Tsukuba Center Square

文字数 1,521文字

The Tsukuba Center building, which opened in October 1983, is a representative work of Japanese post-modern architecture by architect Arata Isozaki (磯崎新) and has become a landmark of Tsukuba City.

It is a complex facility consisting of a hotel, a concert hall, a shopping mall, and a plaza. Regretfully, Arata Isozaki passed away recently (Dec. 28, 2022).

The plaza is called “Tsukuba Center Square” and is modeled after “Piazza del Campidoglio” in Rome. Piazza del Campidoglio is located at the top of a hill and has a bronze statue in the center, while Tsukuba Center Square is located at a low elevation and has a fountain in the center. This is because the design is the reverse of Piazza del Campidoglio.

Dogs are not allowed in the Tsukuba Center Building hotel, concert hall, or shopping mall, but can enter the plaza.

The Tsukuba Center Square and its surroundings have been used as filming locations for futuristic sci-fi movies and TV shows, so some people may think this is a familiar landscape.

The recently installed ball-shaped face seems too unique and disrupted the design of the plaza.

④A stream runs along the stairs toward the fountain.

⑤I’m walking up the stairs.

⑥I have just come down the stairs.

⑦I’m approaching the fountain.
