“Anyoji Temple (安養寺)” is located in Joso City and is somewhat famous for its hydrangea flowers. It's not very famous, but we had some time, so we went to see the hydrangea flowers there.

Anyoji is a temple built on the banks of the Kinugawa River. The embankment of the river is public land, and usually temples cannot be built there.

Anyoji Temple has been in its current location since before the Meiji government was established, so it is exceptionally located on the embankment.

Until the railroad was built in the Meiji period, the Kinugawa River was thriving with boat transportation, and the riverside (river bank, boat station), which corresponded to the railroad station, was lively.

On the embankment of the Kinugawa River next to Anyoji Temple, there is a stone monument of "Yokosone River Bank Ruins". “Yokosone River Bank” means a loading area (ship station) of Yokosone Village. This stone monument was built by Joso City in 2,000 as a set with the stone monument of "Mitsukaido River Bank Ruins".

In 1629, the Kinugawa River was separated from the Kokaigawa River at Terahata, downstream from Anyoji Temple. Due to the change in the flow of the Kinugawa River, the Yokosone riverbank was abolished and a new Mitsukaido riverbank was constructed upstream. This is the beginning of Joso City (formerly Mitsukaido City).

Until 1629, the Yokosone riverbank adjacent to Anyoji Temple was a distribution hub. Anyoji Temple is located on the embankment of the Kinugawa River because it was next to the riverbank where people gathered.

① This is the bank of the Kinugawa River. Anyoji Temple is in front of the embankment of the Kinugawa River on the left.

② I am on the embankment of the Kinugawa River. You can see the toll Mitsukaido Bridge in the back.

③ If you go straight on the embankment in Photo①, you'll come to a roadblock. Beyond the bar closed to traffic is the precincts of Anyoji Temple.

④ I’ve come down the embankment diagonally to the road. You can see the hydrangea flowers of Anyoji Temple. You can see the stone monument on the left.

⑤ On the stone monument, it is written "Yokosone River Bank Ruins".

⑥ This is a photo of the path to Anyoji Temple and the temple gate. The stairs are too steep for me, so we’ll find another route.

⑦ We’ve found another route, which is a car route.

⑧ I’m climbing the slope of the car route. Hydrangea flowers are beautiful.

⑨ I’ve climbed the slope of the car route. Hangeshou(半夏生) can be seen in front of the hydrangea flowers.

⑩ This is a close-up photo of Hangesho. The leaves just below the white flower spikes turn half white in the time of flowering. The white parts in Photo⑨ are white leaves, not flower spikes.

⑪ A group of Jizo statues are in the house. There are a few hydrangeas on the right.

⑫ Another group of Jizo was also in the house. When we entered the precinct, the number of hydrangea flowers decreased.
