Plum blossom season is already over, and Dad did some research to see if daffodils were blooming beautifully at this time of the year and found that they were blooming at Kitayama Park in Kasama City.
It turns out that Kitayama Park also has Mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage).
Although he was unable to obtain data on Mizubasho blooms in 2023, the metrological agency said that the cherry blossoms would bloom at least 10 days earlier than usual, so Dad assumed that Mizubasho would be in bloom earlier as well.
The Mizubasho of Ozenuma are famous. They grow wild in the high marshes.
However, many national parks are off-limits to dogs, so I’ve never seen Mizubasho.
Pets are allowed in Kitayama Park, so I went to see Mizubasho flowers for the first time in my life.
What is my impression of the Mizubasho flowers?
The flowers are exceedingly small.
Mizubashou has a life span of several decades. A fully grown plant produces flowers larger than my face.
In Ozenuma, a swamp between Gunma Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture, there is an oversized Mizubasho called "Obake Mizubasho".
Unfortunately, the Mizubasho in Kitayama Park are about the size of my nose.
