The 40.1 km Tsukuba Railway Tsukuba Line connecting Tsuchiura Station and Iwase Station opened in 1918 and closed in 1987.
The site of the railway became a prefectural cycling road called ”Tsukuba Ring Ring Road”. In 2016, it was merged with the cycling road that circled Lake Kasumigaura, and became the “Tsukuba Kasumigaura Ring Ring Road” (total length 180km), one of only six national cycle routes in Japan.
The name of “Tsukuba Ring Ring Road” has been changed to “Tsukuba Kasumigaura Ring Ring Road”. But, this name is very long, so the former name “Tsukuba Ring Ring Road” is also used.
Cherry trees are planted on Tsukuba Ring Ring Road. The main old stations have been renovated into resting places and parking lots are also maintained. Tsukuba Ring Ring Road is a popular cycling road for beginners because it used to be a railroad track with gentle ups and downs. Besides, the cyclists can enjoy cherry blossoms in the spring.
This time, I’ll introduce the Mushikake Rest Area (formerly Mushikake Station), the Fujisawa Rest Area (formerly Hitachi Fujisawa Station), and the former Tadobe Station.
① I’m on the platform of the Mushikake Rest Area. Two-thirds of the platform has been renovated into a wisteria trellis.

③ In front of us, a woman called out, "There it is." When I looked over there, there was “Nejibana”. (Another names for “Nejibana” are “Chinese ladies’ tresses” and “Spiranthes sinensis”.)
④ I am in the Mushikake Rest Area. On the other side is Mt. Tsukuba.
⑤ I am in the Mushikake Rest Area. I’ll return to the parking lot on the left.
⑥ I am in the Fujisawa Rest Area. "Furusato no Mori" is on the upper right.
⑦ I am at the Fujisawa Rest Area. There are two platforms here.
