Gugyoji Temple is a temple in Joso City with beautiful flowers.
I already introduced the autumn leaves and Princess Sen’s grave there in chapter 307 as well as the cherry blossoms there in chapter 374.

Here, I’ll introduce Higanbana (alias:red spider lilies, Lycoris radiata, equinox flower) in Gugyoji Temple, which bloom around the autumn equinox day.

A lot of Higanbana are planted in the grounds of Gugyoji Temple. When we visited it on a Sunday morning, there were many photographers. They gathered around the Higanbana near the main gate, and no one was photographing the Higanbana deep within the precincts.

When we went around the grounds, we saw Higanbana all over. I thought that Gugyoji Temple was the best place to see Higanbana in southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture.

Well, in this chapter, I’ll also introduce the unusually colored Higanbana.

Red Higanbana is a triploid plant, so it cannot produce seeds and cannot be improved.
To increase the number of Higanbana, you need to divide the bulbs.

Lycoris radiata var. pumila, which is a different species of Higanbana, produces seeds in a diploid manner and is hybridized with other species to create garden varieties.

Lycoris radiata var, pumila also has red flowers and is visually indistinguishable from Higanbana. Garden cultivars of Lycoris radiata var.pumila has flowers of various colors such as pink and yellow.

The white-flowered Lycoris ×albiflora Koidz, is also not a Higanbana, but a hybrid of Lycoris radiata var. pumila.

I had previously thought that Higanbana only had red flowers, but I was surprised to see its colorful different species of Higanbana.
