Kijo Park (亀城公園) in Tsuchiura City is a park that maintains the former “Honmaru” and “Ninomaru” of Tsuchiura Castle.

※”Honmaru” means the main building of a castle, and “Ninomaru” means the castle wall surrounding the outside of Honmaru.

Even now, the moat, turret gate, east turret, west turret, Kasumi gate, and the former Maekawaguchi gate of Tsuchiura Castle remain. The east and west turrets are reconstructed structures. The east turret is part of the Tsuchiura City Museum, which is adjacent to the park.

This park is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot with about 50 Someiyoshino cherry trees on the premises, and has been selected as one of the best 200 Castles in Japan.

On our way home from Manabe Elementary School, we also stopped by Kijo Park.

① I am in front of the turret gate. On the other side of the gate are the ruins of Honmaru.

② I am right under the turret gate. You can see the same cherry blossoms as in Photo ①.

③ I am in front of the west turret.

④ I am in front of the east turret.

⑤ I am in front of the east turret. The museum is under renovation, and the east turret should be open for free admission, but it was not open. It may have been too early.

⑥ Behind the moat, you can see the front entrance. During the cherry blossom festival, there are shops here. It is hidden by trees, but the white wall on the left is Kasumi gate.

⑦ I’m looking at the Japanese monkeys in the mini zoo in the park.
