文字数 1,749文字

Utsunomiya Light Rail began operating on August 26, 2023. This is the first new tram line in Japan to open in 75 years, following the Manyo Line (万葉線) in Toyama Prefecture.

The Utsunomiya Light Rail, officially called the “Utsunomiya Haga Light Rail Line”, runs for 14.5km between the Utsunomiya Station East Exit stop and the Haga-Takanozawa Industrial Park stop.

Recently, a mid-scale type-of railway called a “light rail” has been introduced. Its size is somewhere between a large railway line and a small streetcar (tram).

When a medium-scale light railway runs on railway lines, it is called a tram-train.
It is difficult to distinguish between these types of light railways, and the British Light Rail Transport Association (LRTA) classifies Utsunomiya light rail as a tram.

Dogs are allowed on the Utsunomiya Light Rail if they are in a dog carrier.
I don't like being in narrow places like a dog carrier, so I went to see the Utsunomiya Light Rail without taking a ride.

① The light rail station is far from my home (about a 2 hours' drive), so I’ve gotten tired of waiting in the car.

② We’ve arrived at the station. From the platform, you can see the Nikko Mountain Range.

③ We're waiting for a train.

④ An inbound train has come into view.

⑤ The train has entered the platform.

⑥ The train has stopped. The yellow boomerang-like shape is the symbol of Utsunomiya Light Rail.

⑦ The train started moving.

⑧ An outbound train has come in behind the inbound train.

⑨ The outbound train has stopped. On the side of the train, it says, "LIGHTLINE", not "Light Rail". “Light Line” is a nickname for “Light Rail”.

⑩ The outbound train has also departed.

⑪ There's still some time until the next train, so we’ll go home now.
