（３２４） Ｉ ｇｏ ｔｏ Ｓａｋａｎｏ Ｇａｒｄｅｎ

The Sakano family settled in Oonogo-machi, Joso City, Ibaraki Prefecture during the Sengoku period. In 1725, they became wealthy farmers, leading the development of “Iinuma Shinden” as the "president (頭取)".
(※” Shinden means farmland that has been reclaimed to make new fields. And “Iinuma” is the name of the place.)
Ninomiya Kinjiro (二宮金次郎 later 二宮尊徳) was dispatched to the Sakano family residence during the Tenpo era (1830-1844) to teach the residents how to farm.
The main building (built around 1704) and the front gate built on a vast 1ha site were designated as national important cultural properties in 1968.
The Sakano family donated the building and grounds to Joso City in 1998.
They built a new house in the neighborhood and moved there.
The Sakano family Residence layout and gardens were restored, and have been open to the public since April 2001 as the “Mitsukaido Museum of Natural History(水海道風土博物館)”.
Around the year 2000, they started planting roses, hydrangeas, seasonal flowers, wildflowers, etc. around their new house. Now, their gardens include a rose garden with 1,000 old roses and 500 varieties of modern roses, and a hydrangea mountain with 100 hydrangeas.
The gardens are collectively named "The Natural Gardens of Sakano" and are open to the public.
So, we visited the gardens.
When the garden owner, who is one of the descendants of the Sakano family, saw me, she remembered the Chihuahua she used to have. She said, “He died in 2022 at the age of seventeen. Shortly before his death, he could no longer eat dog food, and his last meal was his favorite foods: fried chicken and Yakisoba (stir-fried noodle).”
