It was the Sunday after we returned from Lake Nojiri when Mom said, "Oh, this yogurt is more watery than usual. I wonder if they changed the recipe." I always get Mom's favorite yogurt, so this issue is personal.
On the very next day, Mom noticed that the fridge wasn't cold. She said that the reason the yogurt tasted bad was probably because the fridge broke down. The freezer doesn't seem to be broken because the ice hasn't melted.
This fridge has been used since before I came here. In other words, I don't know how long it's been in use. I hear it's more than 10 years old and can't be repaired. So, Mom and Dad went to an electronics store that day and ordered a new fridge.
Recently, there is a shortage of electronic chips, so there are fridges that take three months to deliver. Mom and Dad have ordered a model that is in stock and will be delivered on the coming Thursday.
In other words, we must live without a refrigerator for three days.
My dog food can be stored at room temperature, but soft-boiled eggs, boiled chicken and apple toppings will spoil if they are not stored in the fridge. I thought, "It's a little disappointing that the toppings will spoil."
Mom and Dad planned to refrigerate food in Styrofoam boxes filled with ice, until the new refrigerator arrived. It was as if we were camping!!
In front of the fridge, three large Styrofoam boxes were lined up, and Mom and Dad began to put ice and the food in them.
The ice inside the Styrofoam boxes melts in half a day. Therefore, for three days, Mom and Dad went to the supermarket in the mornings and evenings to get ice, and while drenched in sweat, they replaced the melted ice in the Styrofoam with fresh ice.
To my joy, the toppings of my meal were safely cooled, and I was able to eat them as usual.
The long-awaited new fridge was finally delivered on Thursday morning. Mom and Dad said something like, "Three Sacred Treasures （三種の神器）are wonderful!" Ah, these days, young people no longer refer to the “Three Sacred Treasures”. This will give you an idea of how old Mom and Dad are.
(※Three Sacred Treasures: In the 1950s, the black-and-white TV, the washing machine, and the fridge were called “Three Sacred Treasures” because they were essential status symbols.)
I don't think any of the fridge you use are more than 10 years old, but fridges have advanced in the last 10 years. In our new fridge, ice cubes appear in the freezer when you put water in a certain place in the refrigerator. It's like magic. This is a feature that our old fridge did not have.
Now that I know how easy it is to make ice cubes. I’m in a good mood when Dad puts ice in my water bowl.
I’m looking at newly made ice.
I'm tasting ice water.
I'm satisfied with the taste of the ice water, saying “it is delicious". I feel like a chef.
I taste it again and think, "Maybe it's a little too cold."
