"Tsukuba Lantern Art" is an annual event where lanterns created by elementary and junior high school students in the city are displayed in and around the center plaza. It is held on the Saturday and Sunday of the week before Christmas in December.
Tsukuba Lantern Art started in 2009. In 2019, about 7,000 lanterns were exhibited, but it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus.
This event reopened in 2022. We had never seen lantern art before, so last year (2022), Dad went to see it first on Saturday, and then we all went there on Sunday. However, when we went there on Sunday, no lanterns were on display because of fierce winds.

This year, 2023, we went to see the long-awaited lantern art on the first day, Saturday the 16th. There were about 6,000 magnificent lanterns.
By the way, the next day, Sunday the 17th, we passed by the center plaza on our way home from the farmers' market and saw a sign saying, “Due to strong winds, the lantern art has been canceled.'' Sunday's lantern art was canceled for the second year in a row.
