In Studio Ghibli's movie "The Boy and the Heron (少年とサギ、君たちはどう生きるか)" released on July 14, 2023, a gray heron (Ardea cinerea) plays an active role.

In Tsukuba City, we have often seen white herons (egrets), but recently we’ve started to see gray herons as well.

However, this is simply due to people paying more attention to gray herons because of the influence of the movie “The Boy and the Heron''. There may have been many gray herons until now.

Gray herons are more wary than other birds and will run away if they make eye contact with humans.

Therefore, it is difficult to take a photo with a gray heron.

In this chapter, I’d like to introduce a gray heron to you, which we met during our walk.

① We’ve come to Akatsuka Park for a walk.

② These Higanbana were past their prime.

④ A gray heron is eating at the pond.

⑤ I’m resting at the park I often visit.

⑥ There is a gray heron in the swamp next to the grass. It seems to be the same species as the gray heron that was in Akatsuka Park.

⑦ We’ve come to Takasaki Natural Forest to see some cosmos and kochia.

⑧ I’m taking a walk in front of the cosmos.

⑨ I’m taking a walk in front of the cosmos.

⑩ I'm on the wooden path by the pond. You can see a gray heron in the back right. My photo is a little blurry.

⑪ This is a close-up photo of the gray heron.

⑫ Dad tried to capture the gray heron and me in the same photo again, but the gray heron was not in the photo.

⑬ I think it would be difficult to have my photo taken with a gray heron.
