(446) Hachimanyama Park

As I wrote in chapter 445, we went all the way to Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, to see the Utsunomiya Light Rail.

It would be boring to go home after just seeing the Light Rail, so we decided to go to Hachimanyama Park, because we found that it was the most popular park in Utsunomiya.

Hachimanyama Park is an 11.8 hectare (about 30 acres) wide park located in the center of Utsunomiya and includes Utsunomiya Tower, Adventure Bridge, go-karts, large complex playground equipment, and a zoo.

In 1641, Okudaira Tadamasa(奥平忠昌), the governor of Mimasaka, the lord of Utsunomiya Castle, built Hanawada Hachimangu Shrine, and the mountain where the park is located came to be called Hachimanyama.

In 1906, the amusement park "Shiodaen" opened in Hachimanyama.

In 1925, Utsunomiya City purchased the ”Shiodaen” and turned it into Hachimanyama Park.

In 1999, Adventure Bridge was installed. It is Japan's largest monostorm steel suspension slab bridge (stiffened girder suspension slab bridge), with a length of 152m and a height of 30m (25m above ground).

In 2003, this park was selected as one of the top 100 scenic spots.

① I’ve started to walk at Hachimanyama Park.

②This is the torii gate of Hanawada Hachimangu Shrine.

③This is a pony. Dogs are not allowed to walk in the animal park, so Mom is carrying me.

④This is a photo of the pony and me.

⑤ Now, we’ll climb Mt. Hachiman.

⑥ Utsunomiya Tower is now visible.

⑦ Next to the tower is the 152m long Adventure Bridge.

⑧ I'm looking at the bridge. The stairs at both ends are too big for a Chihuahua, so I’ll ask Mom to carry me.

⑨ I’m walking on the bridge. Unlike a suspension bridge, it doesn't sway, but it does make me a little nervous.

⑩ I continue my walk on the bridge.

⑪ This is the scenery under the Adventure Bridge. It's twenty-five meters above the ground, so my legs are shaking.

⑫ I’ll continue to walk around Adventure Bridge.

⑬ We’ve crossed the bridge and arrived at Adventure U. You can see the mascot.

⑭ I am in front of the mascot.

⑮ This is a close-up photo.

⑯ Adventure U has playground equipment.

⑰ I am in front of the playground equipment. Now we’ll make a U-turn and return to the parking lot.

⑱ We’ve finished crossing the bridge.

⑲ In the shade, there is still snow that fell last week.

⑳ I am in front of the snow.

㉑ The pond in the Japanese garden is frozen.

㉒ There is a white wagtail on the frozen pond. The parking lot is right there.
