The cherry blossoms at Hannyain Temple are designated as cultural assets by the prefecture under the name of “Ryugasaki weeping cherry blossoms”.

The Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education wrote:
“This weeping cherry tree is a cultivar of Edo Higan (江戸彼岸) and has “weeping” properties. It is estimated to be 350 to 400 years old, with an average height of about 10m, a trunk circumference of about 5m, and has branches of 15 by 22 meters. It has been designated as a giant old weeping cherry tree, and it presents a beautiful sight when in bloom.”

They say this is "the oldest weeping giant cherry tree" in Ibaraki. With regard to "all" cherry blossoms, however, Oto Yamazakura (about 500 years old) is much older.

Among the giant cherry trees, the followings are Japan's five great cherry trees.

・Miharu Takizakura (三春滝桜) in Fukushima Prefecture(estimated age:1000)
・Yamataka Jindaizakura (山高神代桜) in Yamanashi Prefecture (estimated age :1,800-2,000)
・Neodani Usuzumizakura (根尾谷淡墨桜) in Gifu Prefecture (estimated age:1500)
・Ishito Kabazakura (石戸蒲桜) in Saitama Prefecture (estimated age:800)
・Kariyado Gebazakura (狩宿下馬桜) in Shizuoka Prefecture (Estimated age:800)

Gebazakura is a mountain cherry tree, but the other four are weeping cherry trees (Edohigan-zakura).
