After climbing the approach to Yakuoin, you’ll see the main hall in front of you.
To the right of the main hall is Benten Pond.
Benzaiten (the goddess of music, rhetoric, wealth, wisdom, and longevity) is enshrined on an island in the pond.
Makabe-machi (真壁町), where Yakuoin Temple is located, is famous for its Doll’s Festival, which revitalizes the town.
Yakuoin also participated in the Doll’s Festival and displayed Hina dolls.
In the building next to Benzaiten, Hina dolls on a tiered stand were displayed.
Besides, Hina dolls on smalls boat were displayed at Benten Pond.
At Yakuoin Temple, even in June when the hydrangeas are in bloom, Hina dolls on small boats are displayed at Benten Pond. This event is called "Minazuki decoration".
※Minazuki means June by the lunar calendar.
In ancient China, allegedly, there was a custom for people to go into a river, to purify themselves on the first “snake day (巳の日)” that comes at the beginning of lunar March (calendars corresponded to Oriental zodiac animals as well as several other things such as time, year and direction). It is said that the Doll's festival originated from the custom of throwing the dolls into the sea.
Over time these dolls transforms into Hina dolls and becomes “Nagashibina” or paper dolls which are floated downriver.
“Nagashibina” is an old event that also appears in "Suma" in The Tale of Genji.
Later, Hina dolls came to be displayed on stairs as they are today.
In other words, the Hina dolls on the boats of Benten Pond adhere to the traditional style.
