Sailing net fishing using a hobikisen(sailing boat, 帆引き船) is a fishing method invented in 1877 by Ryohei Orimoto, who was born in Kasumigaura City.

At that time, fishermen put up huge sails of 9 meters high and 16 meters wide on a hobikisen. Then, they used the force of the wind to pull the boat sideways and pulled the nets to catch fish like smelt.
This sailing net fishing was an epoch-making fishing method that could replace conventional fishing methods which required more than 20 people until then.

From around 1965, trawler boats replaced hobikisen. So hobikisen disappeared.

In 1971, hobikisen for sightseeing were revived as cultural heritage.

In March 2018, "Kasumigaura Sailing Seine Fishing Techniques" was selected as a National Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

I want to ride a hobikisen, but there are no hobikisen that tourists can board. Luckily, they can be viewed from an accompanying sightseeing boat.

Hobikisen for sightseeing are currently owned by Kasumigaura City, Tsuchiura City, and Namegata City. These three cities separately operate hobikisen for sightseeing and sightseeing pleasure boats.

This time, we took a sightseeing boat to see the two hobikisen owned by Tsuchiura City: "Shichifukujin Maru (Seven Lucky Gods boat, 七福神丸)" and "Suigo Maru II(水郷丸II)".

You can see the two hobikisen from the pleasure boat.
Dogs can ride as long as they are in a cage or held by their owner. At this time, I was on Mom’s lap.

⑯ P.S. After this, Dad went to Lake Kasumigaura in Omitama City and tried to take pictures of Diamond Tsukuba. But clouds rolled in and he couldn't take good pictures. To me, the clouds above Mt. Tsukuba look like a hamburger.
