(17) A trip to Yamadera

It seems Mom and Dad have canceled their sightseeing trip to Thailand because of the coronavirus.

Ah, you’re wondering how I know they have canceled. Well, when they travel abroad, I stay at my vet's pet hotel. But a few days ago, I heard Mom cancel the pet hotel reservation by phone, so I knew that they weren't going overseas. Staying at a pet hotel is boring, but it's a valuable opportunity for a diet. My last stay there was 3 days and I was able to lose 200g, which impressed Mom.

Instead, we went to Yamadera (Risshakuji Temple in Yamagata Prefecture) because the coronavirus wasn't serious there. When Mom and Dad travel domestically, I can go with them. There is no problem because we travel by car. Besides, more hotels allow pet owners to stay with their dogs now.

Yamadera is a temple on the top of a mountain, and Dad chose it because dogs can also go there. You have to climb about 1000 steps to the top of the mountain, though.

After a lot of research, Dad came to the astonishing conclusion that "dogs can go up to Yamadera, but they can't go down." That’s because dogs aren’t good at going down stairs with high steps. As in the Japanese nursery rhyme called “Touryanse,” “it's good to go but scary to return.”

Well, I don't want to stay alone in the car in the parking lot. I was about to tell Dad, “ I don’t want to wait alone in the car,” when he said, "when we’re going up, Meru-chan also walks on her own and on the way back, Mom holds Meru-chan by a dog sling (a special carry bag for a dog)." What is a dog sling? I wondered.

In the end, Mom and Dad ordered a dog sling online. In three days, a dog sling came, so I tried it on and it was OK. Then we were ready to go on a trip.

We drove to the parking lot of Yamadera. There, Mom attached a dog lead on me. I started walking on my own feet. I wanted to go up all 1000 stairs on my own feet, but unfortunately the last 20 steps were too high for a Chihuahua. But except for that, I walked on my own.

At the innermost temple of Yamadera, Mom attached the dog sling on me and went down the mountain. Someone who passed us on the way mistook me for a human baby and shouted, "Oh, boy! It's a dog." “Wow! A cute dog!”
Anyway, I really liked the dog sling because I enjoyed being cuddled in Mom’s arms.

I'm climbing the stairs on my own.

The dog sling feels very good.

I can see farther than walking on my own!
