(481) Yaezakura in Doho Park

文字数 3,135文字

Doho Park(洞峰公園) is the largest urban park in Tsukuba City, with an area of 20ha(≒49.4ac). It is centered around a swamp called "Doho Numa".

On Feb.1, 2024, the management of the park was transferred from Ibaraki Prefecture to Tsukuba City.

Doho Numa originated from a natural pond that was rebuilt for irrigation purposes in the early Edo period as a measure against water shortages.

A map from 1788 depicts Matsuki Pond, which is five times as large as the current Doho Numa. In 1971, the water shortage in the Matsuki area was alleviated by the transfer of water from Lake Kasumigaura, and Doho Numa became unnecessary. With the construction of Tsukuba Science City, Doho Numa was reclaimed in 1972, and part of it remained. This is the current Doho Numa.

In 1976, the New City Memorial Hall (新都市記念館)was completed, and in 1980, Doho Park opened.

The New City Memorial Hall, gym, and heated pool in Doho Park were designed by Otaka Masato (大高正人).

Since the New City Memorial Hall was designed to be integrated with Doho Numa, the vegetation of Doho Numa and Doho Park are also thought to have been designed by Otaka Masato.

There is one thing that is disappointing to me. If Yoshino cherry trees had been planted along the waterside of Doho Numa, like the Fukuoka Weir, they would be reflected beautifully on the water surface.

Actually, the Someiyoshino trees in Doho Park are not planted around Doho Numa but instead planted in a different area.

Doho Numa can be accessed from two places: the “Water and Green Field” and the “wooden deck for bird watching”.

Even if you get on the wooden deck I just mentioned, the reeds in the pond are so overgrown that you can only see the reeds.

Well, the best place for a walk in Doho Park is the "Water and Green Field", where you can see Yaezakura blossoms in spring and some autumn leaves in fall.

In this chapter, I’ll show you two Yaezakura trees planted in the Water and Green Field.
