次の朝

Next morning my father appeared at the breakfast table with a face like a mummy.
次の朝、お父さんは包帯でミイラのような顔で起きてきた

Then he took off the bandage and his face was swollen like a Zombie.
その包帯を取ると、ゾンビのように腫れた顔が出てきた

My mother said,
お母さんは言った

“I’ve told you to be careful when you drink!”
飲みに行くときは、こけないように気を付けて下さいって、言ったでしょ！

Then I said,“It’s far better than being run over and dying!”
それでぼくは、轢かれて死ぬより、ずっとましだよと言ってやった

So my mother said, “Don’t say things like that. It might bring bad luck!”
するとお母さんは　縁起でもないと怒った

Then my father painfully ate his breakfast.
それからお父さんは、顔を痛そうに朝ごはんを食べた

And he looked a little gloomy probably because he was remembering 　the ‘crashes’ the day before.
それとお父さんは、前の日の墜落を思い出したのか、少し憂鬱そうだった

After that, he went to work still a little gloomy.
それからお父さんはまだ憂鬱そうに仕事に出かけた

Several days later in the evening,
数日後の夕方

my father came home whistling the song ‘Take it Easy’.
お父さんは口笛を吹きながら帰ってきた

I was in the garden still doing the water pistol experiment as before.
ぼくはまた水鉄砲で科学実験をやっていた

His swollen face had changed into livid bruises.
お父さんの顔は普通の青あざくらいに治っていた

Then, my father looked at me and shouted,
そしてお父さんは、ぼくの顔を見るなり叫んだ

“I’ve done it!!”
やったぞ！

I was afraid that
ぼくは不安だった

he might freak out like he did at the intersection.
また酔っ払って、また横断歩道で寝転ぶのかと

Instead he kept on saying,
その代わりにお父さんはこう言った

“The president congratulated me!
社長に褒められた！

He was very glad to know of my terrible flying!
おれの酷いフライトのことを知り、とても喜んだんだ
