元気のないデビル

I became close friends with Devil.
ぼくはデビルと親友になったのに

But recently he had been looking down.
だけどこのごろ、元気がない

“What’s up Toshio?”
利夫君どうしたの？

I asked him while we were eating lunch at school.
学校で給食の時間、ぼくはデビルに言った

Usually he eats a lot.
デビルはいつも良く食べる

He eats almost everything including carrots and onions that I don’t like.
ぼくの嫌いなにんじんもたまねぎも、デビルはなんでもよく食べるんだ

Then he said.
それでぼくが訊いたらデビルは言った

“Well, my mum cooks everything very well.”
おれの母ちゃん、なんでも上手に料理するんだ

“Oh, I envy you!”
うらやましいな！

“But she doesn’t cook these days.”
だけどこの頃料理してくれないんだ

“Why?”
どうして？

“Well, my mum is…”
母ちゃんが…

“What’s happened to her?”
お母さんがどうしたの？

“She is in hospital.”
入院してるんだ

“Oh!”
え～！

“She’s been there for three months.”
もう３ヶ月も入院している

“So long?”
そんなに？

“Dad says she’ll be back soon.
父ちゃんは、母ちゃんもうすぐ退院だって言ってる

But when I saw her the other day in the hospital,
だけどこのまえ病院に行ってみたら

she was scrawny.”
母ちゃんがりがりだった

“Really?”
え～！

“She eats almost nothing
何も食えねえみたいで

and was on a drip.
点滴だけで生きてるんだ

And I feel she is…
そしておれ、思うけど

she is going to die!”
母ちゃん死にそうなんだ

“Is it that serious?”
そんなに深刻なの？

“Maybe.
多分

So I’m afraid my mum will…”
だからおれ、心配だ　母ちゃんが…

“I understand.”
そうなんだ

“So what should I do?”
おれ、どうしたらいい？

“Shall we go to the hospital for a visit
今度お見舞いに行こうか？

with something delicious?”
おいしいものいっぱい持って

“She can’t eat!”
母ちゃん食えねえんだぞ！

“Oh, I see.”
う～ん、そうだよね

“Well, Ichiro,
なあイチロウ

you are close friends with Doc.”
おまえ、博士と友達だろう？

“How do you know of that?”
どうしてそれを知ってるの？

“My sidekicks saw
子分が見たんだ

you’re going to his house.”
おまえが博士の家へ入るところ

“Well, yes. He is my friend.”
そうだよ　先生とは友達だよ

“So ask him to do something!”
だったら博士に頼んでくれよ

“Do something for what?”
何を？

“Do something for mum!”
母ちゃんに、何かしてほしいんだ

“But he is a physicist.”
だけど先生は物理学者だよ

“Physicist?
ブツリ？

No problem! Whatever-ist he is!
かまわねええ！　何学者でも！

Anyhow! Ask him!”
