そうだ　この帽子をかぶれ

It’s a Sombrero.
ソンブレロだ

これでだれもお前さんだと気付くまい

Well, I bought it when I traveled to Mexico.

Put on it and push it down.”
深く被れ

Saying so, Doc took a red Sombrero on the wall and put it on my head.
そう言って茶トラ先生は、壁からソンブレロを取ってぼくに被せた

Then said,
そして言った

“And it is lucky for us that,

‘Flying Squid’ is a Chinese restaurant.
飛びイカは中華料理屋だ

If it were a bar or a saloon,
これが飲みやだったら

I would have had to change you to twenty years old or more.
わしはお前さんを二十歳以上にする必要があった

しかしマシンは今、不調なのだ

Then I put on the red suit and Sombrero.
それでぼくは赤いスーツを着てソンブレロを被り

Doc put on the traffic vest,
茶トラ先生は交通整理のチョッキを着て

held the emergency signal light in one hand,
緊急信号のランプを片手に

the large first-aid kit in the other
大きな救急箱をもう一方の手に

and put the whistle strap around his neck.
笛を首にかけ

And we went to ‘Flying Squid’ by taxi.
そしてタクシーに乗り飛びイカへ向かった

Then we arrived and walked in the restaurant with everyone staring at us.
そこへ着いて、それからぼくらはみんなの冷たい視線を浴びながら、そのレストランに入った

And Doc murmured,
茶トラ先生はつぶやいた

“Nobody will see we are putting a tail on someone in such strange garments.”
こんな変な格好なら、わしらが誰かを尾行しておるとは、誰も思うまい

There were several big round tables in the restaurant
そのレストランには、いくつかの大きな丸いテーブルがあった

and we found my father and the staff sitting at the one in the rear of it.
そのうち、奥の方の一つのテーブルに、お父さんたちのグループがいた

Perhaps they were holding a comforting party.
