友達

Then Dr Gestalt came home from Himarayas and I began to practice Karate at his dojo
それからゲシュタルト先生はヒマラヤから帰り、ぼくは先生の道場で空手を習い始め

and continued it for years
それを何年も続け

to be strong and to have a robust body.
強くなり、丈夫な体にもなった

But I’ve never injured others
だけどぼくは決して他人を傷つけないよ

since Dr. Gestalt always told me not to.
いつもゲシュタルト先生に、そういわれているし

And…, I became close friends with Devil!
それから…、それからぼくは、デビルと親友になったんだ！

His name is Toshio Tanaka.
彼は田中利夫君

And sometimes I call him ‘Toshio’ and sometimes ‘Devil’ depending on the situation.
ぼくは彼を利夫君とよんだり、デビルと呼んだりする

But even if I call him ‘Devil’, he knows I’m only joking.
だけどデビルと呼んでも彼は怒らない　冗談だと分かっているから

And he is still a wild boy
そして彼は相変わらず悪がきで

while I’m still an ordinary boy.
ぼくは相変わらず平凡な子

But we are still good friends.
だけどぼくらは友達だ

We talk about all kinds of things.
ぼくらいろんな話をする

I sometimes tell him how to study
ぼくは彼に勉強の話しをしたり

and he sometimes shows me how to fight.
彼はぼくにケンカの話をしたり

And he has never extorted money from others since then.
それから、彼は他の子を恐喝するようなことはなくなった

This is partly because I’ve always told him not to do.
ぼくがいつもいつも　そんなことするな！って言っているし

And now, I think,
そして今思うに

it was lucky that
とてもラッキーだった

I didn’t beat him on the day of the duel,
それは決闘の時、ぼくが彼をのさなかったこと

and needless to say that
そして言うまでもなく

he wasn’t run over,
彼がトラックに轢かれなくて、本当に良かった！

since now we are close friends.
ぼくらは親友になれたから！
