So Doc went to a corner of the laboratory again
それで茶トラ先生は、もう一度実験室の隅へ行き

holding the black suit
喪服をぶらさげて

and soon aftre, he ‘tailored’ a gray suit
それからあっという間に茶トラ先生がグレーのスーツを「仕立て上げた」

with some unevenness.
少々のぬりむらのある

Then he said,
それから言った

“Well, before putting it on,
あ～、こいつを着る前に

you must get in the Machine.”
タイムエイジマシンに入れ

“Why?”
どうして？

“Any how! Well, how old is your father?”
とにかく！　あ～、お前さんの親父さんの歳は？

“He is forty.”
４０だよ

“Forty years old! It’s so young to die.
４０歳だなんて　そんなに若く死なせるわけにはいかん！

Anyhow, we must save him.”
とにかく親父さんを助けねば

“Yes.”
うん

”And I’ll change you to forty years old.”
それでわしは、タイムエイジマシンでお前さんを４０歳にする

“OK. But why?”
分かったよ　で、なぜ？

“You are the ‘double’ for your father.”
お前さんは親父さんの替え玉になるのだ

So I got in the Machine and soon it began to zoom.
それでぼくはマシンに入り　ぶーぶーいいはじめた

Then I was changed from a thirty year-old man to a forty year-old.
そしてぼくは３０歳から４０歳に変えられた

And I got out of the machine and put on the suit re-painted in gray.
そしてマシンから出てグレーに再塗装されたスーツを着た

“Well, you two are like two peas in a pod.”
お前さんたちは瓜二つだな

“Really?”
ほんとう？

“Yes. You are the spitting image of your father!”
まさに生き写しだ

Then Doc fetched a R.C. aircraft transmitter
それから茶トラ先生はラジコンの送信機を持ってきた

from somewhere in the laboratory
実験室のどこかから

for some reason
何らかの理由で

that I didn’t know at first.
なぜだか分からなかったけれど

And since there was so much ‘Junk’ in the laboratory,
そして茶トラ先生の実験室は、ガラクタであふれかえっているので

I was not so surprised to see such a thing.
そんなものがあったって、ぼくはちっとも驚かない

And anyhow, he started to teach me ‘How to fly R.C. aircraft’.
ともかく茶トラ先生は、ぼくにラジコン飛行機の飛ばし方を教えてくれるみたいだった

But the instruction was tremendously complicated
だけど説明が豪快にややこしくて

and I was thoroughly puzzled.
ぼくはカンペキに困惑した

Then Doc seeing my confusion
すると茶トラ先生は困った様子のぼくをみて

said to me,
言った

“Anyhow, show them exciting flying with max power!”
ともあれ飛行機はフルパワーで豪快に飛ばせ！

So we went to August 23rd in the morning
それからぼくらは８月２３日の朝に移動した

by the Machine
マシンで

at just the same time as before.
以前同様、同じ時刻へ

And we were to drive to the company,
それから自動車でお父さんの会社へ移動するつもり

but before that,
でもその前に

Doc fetched vials labeled ‘Chloroform’ and ‘Tonic’
茶トラ先生はクロロフォルムと書かれた小瓶と気付け薬を持ってきた

from somewhere in his house
家のどこかから

and put them into his pockets with a handkerchief,
そしてそれらをハンカチとともにポケットへ入れた

though I didn’t know why.
理由はさておいて
