The next day, I went to Doc’s laboratory.
次の日、ぼくは茶トラ先生の実験室へ向かった。
Unusually he was not doing experiments.
珍しいことに、先生は実験をやってはいなかった。
Rather, it seemed that he wanted to talk
そうではなくて、先生はぼくと話したがっていた
about the Physical Society meeting.
物理学会での出来事について
“Well, at the Physical Society, we’re…”
あ～、物理学会ではだな、わしは…
But I cut him off and said,
だけどぼくは先生の話の腰を折り、こう言った
“Hey, Doc!
ねえ！茶トラ先生！

was connected to a terrorist-supporting nation!”
テロ支援国家とつながっていたんだ！
“Great Scott!”

もしもテロ支援国家がその技術を手に入れようものなら
they would have applied it to guided missiles.”
奴らはそれを誘導ミサイルに応用すると考えられる
“Yes. My father was talking about that.”
うん。お父さんもそんなこと言ってたよ
“The system is so compact and light-weighted
つまりだな、システムは極めて軽量コンパクト
since it was built for R.C. aircraft.
ラジコン飛行に積めるくらいだからな
They could have developed very small guided missiles.
だから奴らは極めて小さな誘導ミサイルを開発しただろう
And if they had loaded them on a fishing boat or something
そして奴らがそれを小さな漁船か何かに積んで
and approached the seashore in the mid night
夜中に海岸に近づく
near a nuclear power plant,

するとどうなる？
“Wow!”

“Also your father developed a very accurate system.
しかもお前さんの親父さんは大変精密なシステムを開発しておる

そうなればピンポイント攻撃が可能だ
on important facilities.”
重要な施設を狙い打って
“Well, it would have been terrible!”
うわー、それってヤバかったね！
“It might have lead to a catastrophe.
場合によってはカタストロフィーに至っておっただろう
And it is such a tragic future.”
そしてそれは悲劇的な未来だ
“Well, yes.”
だよね
“But we have changed the future.”
だが我々はそんな未来を変えた
“Yes. We have changed it! It’s fantastic, isn't it?”
そうだよ！変えたんだよ！それってイカしてるんじゃない？
“Well yes. And to talk about the future, it is possible to change your future.
そうだ。そして未来と言えば、お前さんの未来だって変えられるんだ
Change your future to a splendid one!”
お前さんの未来を素晴らしいものにするんだ！

次の日、ぼくは茶トラ先生の実験室へ向かった。
