さよなら茶トラ先生

We reached Doc’s house at dusk,
暗くなる前に、ぼくらは茶トラ先生の家に着き

got out of the car
車から降りた

holding the box
田中先生からもらった箱と

and "Orange Mall” shopping bag, containing Doc’s ashes.
茶トラ先生の骨が入った、オレンジモールのショッピングバッグを持って

“What should we do about Doc’s ashes?” I asked.
茶トラ先生の骨、どうしよう？　ぼくは妹に言った

“Hmm, that’s a difficult question.”
う～ん　難しい問題ね

“Will he still be ashes if I take him back to the times I’m living?”
過去へ戻ったら先生、生き返るかな？

“Well, death is something irreversible.
死とは不可逆的なものなのよ

And once someone has turned to ashes,
そして一旦人間が死んで骨になったら

most of the materials that had once composed his body have gone,
その人を形作っていた、ほとんどの物質は失われるの

so I think he’s gone.”
だから茶トラ先生は、もうここにはいないの

“Gone for good?”
先生はいなくなってしまったの？

“No.”
そうよ

“Oh…”
そうなんだ…

“The ashes in the bag are only a part of Doc.
バッグの中の骨は、茶トラ先生のほんの一部

And I think it will be no use…”
だからたとえ何をやったとしても…

“Then, what should we do?”
じゃ、どうすればいいの？

“The best way, I think,
最善のことは

is to bury his ashes in this land that he loved.”
先生が愛したこの土地に、先生の骨を埋めてあげることじゃないかしら

“It might be…”
そうかもね…

“I definitely think so!”
きっとそうよ！

“Then where should we bury him?”
じゃ、どこに埋める？

“What do you think about under that old orange tree?”
あの、みかんの木の根元なんかどう？

“Well I didn’t notice the tree until now.”
あれ、こんなところにみかんの木があったんだ

“Perhaps he planted it many years ago.”
多分茶トラ先生が、ずっと以前に植えたのじゃないかしら

“Maybe so.”
かもね

“So let’s bury his ashes there.”
それじゃ、そこに埋めようか

Then we dug a hole under the tree,
それからぼくらはその木の根元に穴を掘り

buried his ashes in the "Orange Mall" shopping bag,
オレンジモールのショッピングバッグごと骨を埋め

prayed and said,
二人で手を合わせた

“Good bye Doc. May you rest in peace.”
