そしてお父さんが！

And soon after that, Doc ran up to us and said,
その直後、茶トラ先生がやって来て、言った

“Thank god. We’re all safe!”
良かった　オールセーフ！

And we looked at one another.
それからみんなで顔を合わせた

Then all of a sudden, someone shouted, “Wow!”
と、突然、だれかが叫んだ　「わ～～～！」

And we looked at the direction of the voice to find a person lying down on the sidewalk.
それでぼくらが声の方を見ると、歩道に誰かが倒れていた

So we ran up to him
それでその人のほうへ走ると

and found that he was my father
お父さんだった

bleeding from his face.
顔から血を流していた

It seemed he had tripped on the big first-aid kit
お父さんは救急箱につまづいて転んだみたい

that Doc had put on the sidewalk.
その救急箱は茶トラ先生が歩道に置いていたものだ

Then Doc opened the box and attended to his wounds.
それで茶トラ先生は箱をあけ、お父さんの傷の手当をした

Doc said,
茶トラ先生は

“Anyhow, here your father was destined to encounter some kind of misfortune.
ともあれ親父さんは、ここで酷い目に遭う運命だったのだ

And it was very lucky that I’d put the box here.”
だからわしがここに救急箱を置いておいて、本当に良かった

“But you put the box here
え～！　だけどこの箱置いたの茶トラ先生だよ！

and he tripped on it.”
それにお父さんがつまづいたんだから！

“No. No.
ちがうちがう

If I hadn’t put it here,
もしわしが救急箱をここに置かなければ

your father might have run out onto the road.”
親父さんは車道に走り出ていただろう

“OK. I understand. There are so many ways of thinking!”
わかったわかった　考え方はいろいろだね
