After the Flight

After that, we drove to Doc’s laboratory.
“That was such fantastic flying!” Doc said to me in the car, “I could hear the sound of crashes in the toilet.”
“Well, one of them flew beyond the mountains.”
“Oh, I know that.”
“Is it OK what I’ve done?”
“Of course yes. Perhaps no party will be held.”
“But I’m afraid there might be a party to comfort my father or something like that.”
“It might not be possible to be that they will not hold one.”
“Why do you sometimes say things so complicated?”
“Physicists tend to be. But if they’re going to have a party of any sort, then, something more must be done.”
Then we came back to his laboratory. I was changed to seventeen years old, my original age and we went back to July 19th by the Machine. But I wanted to go back to a certain day. The reason was…
“Well, I wanted to go back to August 24th because…”
“Do you want to make sure what’s become of the wake? Well, I recommend you don’t.”
“Why?”
“A certain quantity of time is needed to ‘rewrite’ the destiny.”
“Quantity of time?”
“Yes. Time is a physical quantity. Anyhow, if we go there immediately, the wake might still be being held, or there might be some complicated interactions of unknown origin.”
“No, no. I just want to know the winner of the high school base…”
“You are still thinking about such a stupid thing!”
“Well…”
“You said you were just betting a soft drink or something but you are betting some money, aren’t you?”
“Well, yes…”
“I remember your bike was broken the other day. But now I guess it was broken by someone.”
“Yeah…”
“I see. In short, you had your bike trashed by a bully. Well, I guess the guy was turning at a corner on your bike. Then the front wheel ran over the feces of a dog and the wheel slipped and he fell. I remember the feces on the front wheel that I cleaned. Then the guy had his jeans or something torn, and now you are blackmailed!”
“How did you know all that?”
“Anyhow, you’d better do not worry about it.”
Then I went back to my house on July 19th. Of course no wake was being held. By the way, I was surprised at Doc’s insight. I felt as though my mind had been read. He might have used the ‘Brain Prospective Apparatus’.
