1865年から68年までの一期だけ自由党選出の下院議員を務めた後、南仏ですごす時間が増え、観察を重視した博物学者アンリ・ファーブルとも友達になっている。1873年5月3日、ジョン・スチュアートはオランジュのアンリの家を訪ね、彼と遠出に出かけ、15マイルもの行程をちょこまかと忙しそうに進む小柄な昆虫学者の後を大股で自然を観察しながら続き、リリーに採取した美しい植物のお土産を持参して、楽しい気分で帰宅する。功利主義にはいろいろと不備もあるが、快楽を善とすることは決して間違いではないと呟き、それにしても疲れたと崩れるようにベッドへ倒れこむ。しかし、その暑い土曜日から二日後、急に発熱し、8日の早朝、風土病の丹毒の典型的な症状を示して65歳の生涯を終えている。「私は仕事をなし終えた」とうわ言のような言葉をヘレンは最期に耳にした気がする。遺族はロンドンから要請されたウェストミンスター墓地への大英帝国の宝としての埋葬を拒否し、翌日、彼の亡骸はその歩きなれた道の先にある墓地のハリエットの傍に納められる。二人は、今も、かつての残り香が漂うその場所に眠っている。
