I asked God for strength, that I might achieve,
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.


できるだけ強者たるように神に願い、
私はひ弱なものとされた。
従順であることを謙虚に学べるようにと。

I asked for health, that I might do greater things,
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.


立派なことをたくさん行えるように壮健さを願い、私は虚弱なるものとされた。
もっとましなことを行えるようにと。

I asked for riches, that I might be happy,
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.


幸せであるために金持ちになることを願い、
私は貧しくされた。
賢くなるようにと。

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men, I was given weakness,
that I might feel the need of God.


人々からの賞賛や誉れが受けられるように地位を求め、
私は立場のないものとされた。
神を心から必要と感じられるようにと。

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life, I was given life,
that I might enjoy all things. 


人生の楽しみのすべてを願い、
どんなであってもそれを楽しめる人生を私は与えられた。　

I got nothing I asked for. but everything I had hoped for.


求めたことは何も得られなかったのだが、
しかし私の願いはすべて叶えられている。

Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.


ほとんど、ご意向に沿えない私であったにも関わらず、
心の祈りに、主は答えられた。

I am among men most richly blessed.


もっとも豊かに祝福された人々の内に、今、私はある。
